Bob attended rural school in Palo Alto County, Iowa and Emmetsburg, Iowa, where he graduated from Emmetsburg High School in 1953. He attended Emmetsburg Junior College in 1955, then on to Mankato State College, where he graduated with a BS degree in 1957 and an MS degree in 1963.
