Cillizza. sanford says it is game over. bob goodlatte says they re going to push forward today and he doesn t think that the president s words have an impact on their efforts. who do you believe, chris? bob goodlatte made a funny joke. i ll write that down in my diary, kate. there is no way that ait goes through. the goodlatte bill had already failed, the more conservative version failed yesterday. they postponed the compromise legislation until today. then they double postponed it until next week because the leadership thinks maybe possibly there is a window where they might able to get passage. when you are the president of the united states and come out and say, forget about it, this isn t going anywhere, it gives every member who didn t want to take that vote who has issues with the compromise bill and gives this them a giant out not to do it. i guarantee you with less than five months before the election, they ll take that out. ....
Obviously, for that to occur in the senate would require bipartisan discussions. what s your reaction to that? i think we have to get into the details. i m afraid they will use this as an execution to have indefinite detention of the families until they go through the process. that s unnecessary and just as inhuma inhumane. under obama administration, you had families detained together until we could determine if that kid belonged to that family and number two, whether or not they were a flight risk should they go through the aisylum process. this senate republicans do not have a history of standing up to donald trump. would you be willing to go along with compromise legislation comprehensive immigration reform, democrats have to compromise, republicans have to compromise, if it includes an opportunity for the dreamers, the daca recipients to have a pathway to citizenship, would you be willing to support ....
Is culminating in this issue of children and their parents. does this acute problem at the border and the fact that the optics are so alarming, does it bring people to the table? is congress acting with a lack rate n because of this? we will see a debate play out this week on the hill. that was focussed elsewhere. the so-called compromise legislation that the republican leadership is trying to get folks behind, there is some language in there related to this policy but it doesn t actually solve this problem. it is really focussed on that issue of the deferred action of the daca recipients along with additional border security measures. i have not yet seen congress delve into an actual debate or proposal of a legislative fix to this immediate problem. will herd told us if they had a stand alone bill on just this it would get more than 300 ....
More sweeping immigration legislation has failed time and time and time again in the congress, trying to grapple with so many of these issues all at once. if, in fact, this compromise legislation that you all have talked about fails to pass the house, would you support a narrow immtion proposal to end this separation of families at the border? i would. i m not for separating young children from their families. but again, you have to understand that the sheer scope of what we re grappling with. and frankly, i would hope people that are concerned about this would make sure our borders are more secure and that we follow the president s four pillars which i still think are the most sensible ways of dealing with problems we have. in terms of comprehensive legislation that s probably not going to happen. i much prefer dealing with things in several pieces of legislation. i think we ll have that opportunity this week. i hope our friends on the other side of the aisle help us and i hope repu ....
And that is something the republicans have been trying to do for years. they finally get some kind of compromise legislation. they think that they ve been consulting with the white house. then the president tells fox news on friday morning that he may not be able to sign the more moderate bill. then about nine hours later the white house comes out with an official statement that says the president could support the compromise piece of legislation as well as the goodlatte bill which is a more xefsht conservative piece of legislation. but there are still a lot of questions about what the timeline will be for this legislation, and house republicans are going to have a lot of questions for president donald trump when he comes to them on tuesday night. and we should note how he performs in that meeting, how enthusiastic he is about this compromise piece of legislation will tell us a lot about the future of the bills. and most likely many members of congress, these gop members, may even sa ....
