It s story you want to stick around for this morning. good morning, everyone. i m rob nelson. i m vinita nair. federal agents are investigating what may be a security threat to power plants and industries. the threat comes from computer hackers. and agents say their methods are advanced and urnl. here s abc s michael barr. reporter: it s not just a nationwide threat it s a worldwide threat to power plants. federal investigators discovered hackers are trying to break into computer systems and trying to gain control. the department of homeland security discovered for the first time, a malicious computer code that was created to seize inner workings of not only power plants, but industrial plants. they call it the struxnet worm. most of the activity that we ve seen over the past several months has involved intrusions into enterprise or corporate networks. that s the front office area of a control plant or power plant. reporter: investigators discovered the computer code is cap ....

Here. a thief stole personal information from educational credit management, a company in minnesota. the info is on 3.3 million people. that s what was taken here. some people are calling it the biggest breach of student loan information ever. it was done the old fashioned way. not a super high tech way. there were no computer hackers. someone snagged a portable device with all the information on it and just walked away with it. it had names, addresses, birthdays and worse, the all important social security number as well. it s really mind-boggling that they could walk away like that. you know, a lot of us i mean, talk about how easy it is. it s also easy to throw stuff in the trash and not think about our documents, on the mail. we definitely should get the shredders on a regular basis. shred, shred, shred. exactly. what do we do if it happens to us? for these people that got their information stolen, what should be the next step? ....

Vigilant about watching their money. our senior correspondent eric shawn is here with examples of what s going done. it s stunning. it s growing. local governments now on guard like your account hall, village, budget and school board happening across the country. california to arkansas. one school board was taken for millions. over christmas upstate new york discovered $3 million was sucked out of its budget by computer hackers. the money they say signed off to hong kong, the ukraine and cypress. 20% of annual budget missing. now they take extra precautions to make sure they are protected. anybody watching this broadcast, it could be happening to them right now and they would have no idea and suddenly they goal to their account and find that they are missing millions of dollars or thousands of dollars. and it s very frustrating because when it happens, there is really no one to turn to. luckily for that district, $2.5 million of the missing money has been recovered. ....
