By the close the FTSE 100 was up 0.9% at 6,570.91 while the more domestic-focused FTSE 250 was up 1.2% at 20,096.56. In the US the S&P 500 was 0.2% to 3,700.31 by 4.30pm UK time while cryptocurrency Bitcoin hit a new all-time high above $20,000.
