The Consumers’ Foundation on Friday urged the government to tighten screening and regulations for chopsticks after it found that some utensils marketed as made from high-grade stainless steel were composed of inferior materials. Taipei, Dec. 24 (CNA) After a report found chopsticks masquerading as high-grade stainless steel to be made from inferior metals, a Taiwanese consumer protection group Friday implored the government to tighten screening and regulations.

The Consumers’ Foundation yesterday said it “raises both hands in favor” of a proposed ban on polystyrene cups and urged the public to support businesses that have implemented sustainable practices. The proposed ban, announced on Wednesday by the Environmental Protection Agency, is expected to take effect in July next year. The measure also mandates chain beverage stores, fast-food restaurants and convenience stores to provide a discount to customers who bring their own containers.
