The president of Converse University died Wednesday night when he fell off his bike, according to the coroner and university officials. Spartanburg County Coroner Rusty Clevenger said Jeffrey Harrison Barker, 64, of Spartanburg, was found on Meadowbrook Road. Troopers said Barker ran off the right side of the road and fell off the bike.Troopers said it happened about 6:15 p.m. Troopers said the Barker was wearing a helmet and died at the scene. The Converse University community mourns the death of President Jeffrey H. Barker. Dr. Barker suddenly and tragically died the evening of July 21, 2021, in a fatal bicycle crash in Spartanburg, a release from the university said. The Converse University website said Barker was appointed as Converse University President during the 2021-2022 academic year. He was the university s 11th president.
