One year after a luxury yacht caused extensive damage to the reef in Honolua Bay on Maui’s northwestern coast, staff and volunteers with the Maui Ocean Center Marine Institute continue to care for coral fragments collected from the reef.
The Maui Nui Marine Resource Council’s “Know Your Ocean Speaker Series” will feature Hanalei Hoʻopai-Sylva and Madeleine Sherman of Coral Resilience Lab, discussing their community-focused initiative to restore Hawaiian reefs using locally adapted, thermally tolerant corals.
Female high school students from Kauaʻi, Lānaʻi and Oʻahu spent three days and two nights on Moku O Loʻe under the mentorship of HIMB female researchers, students and staff.
