Island. that s where we find jeff rossen in middletown, pennsylvania. in the context of what is happening here in japan and new questions being raised about nuclear safety what can you tell us about lessons learned from three mile island? no question about it, chris. by the way, the officials here at three mile island, which is still a very much an active nuclear power plant, in fact, the reactor is cooking right now as you can see and the smoke is coming out of two of the cooling towers, they re watching the events in japan very closely and trying to take those lessons and the apply them here. it is not a quake or a tsunami they re affected by here, but just about how the radiation spreads and how they can contain it. they re looking at that. since 1979, when there was a partial core meltdown here they did learn a lot of lessons. jimmy carter, president at the time, presidential commission and an independent federal investigation said the evacuation plan here was no good. the emer ....
Surrounding these spent fuel rods that are not even in containment buildings. what we are now experiencing is the potential of the nuclear nightmare that we have known all along, and frankly the utilities have known it all along, which is why they required congress in 1957 to pass the price/anderson act which sets limits on liability in case of a nuclear accidents like this. they also had maximum credibility accident studies that showed if you have a meltdown like we are seeing in japan from the core meltdown or from the release of these storage pools, the maximum credibility accident that jimmy carter, as president of the united states, was aware of when he thought he might have to evacuate the tees coast because of the three mile island that would actually render an areaed size of pennsylvania uninhabitable. thomas we heard the energy ....
Nuclear facility. and the lessons learned since that incident. so much has changed in the past 32 years. it was march of 1979 when they had the partial core meltdown here at three mile island. a mixture of mechanical failure and human error inside. it shut the plant down, sent radio active gas foot air. no one was killed or died or was injured but it did change the trajectory of nuclear power in this country. they re the first to admit here they didn t have much of an emergency plan at all, not much of an evacuation plan either. now so much has changed inside. what we found so interesting just hanging around the neighborhood for the past 24 hours is many of the same people who experienced this accident as children stayed in town. they still live here today as adults and even senior citizens in some cases. they live with this in their back yards, this constant reminder over the tree line of what can happen, entirely seeing what s happening in japan right ....
