Tiny dog's big heart procedure is first of its kind at Cornell

When a patient weighs only 6.4 pounds, certain procedures can get tricky.
That was the case for Buttercup, an 11-month-old Morkie (Maltese-yorkie mix), who suffered from a deadly congenital cardiac defect. At most hospitals, Buttercup would have had to go through a more invasive and painful surgery to fix her condition, but the cardiology team at the Cornell University Hospital for Animals performed a highly unusual procedure to keep her at her healthiest.

The College of Veterinary Medicine Class of 2022 enjoyed a small slice of normalcy this weekend as it celebrated the time-honored White Coat Ceremony in a considerably scaled back event May 1. Only students were allowed to gather in Bailey Hall, with family and friends tuned in to the livestream.
“The White Coat Ceremony holds particular significance right now, as it has bookended the COVID-19 shutdown,” said Lorin D. Warnick, D.V.M., Ph.D. ’94, the Austin O. Hooey Dean of Veterinary Medicine. “It was the last on-campus ceremony held by the college before we were forced by the outbreak to stop classroom teaching, events, travel and many other changes beginning in March 2020. Now, 14 months later, it is the first on-campus ceremony to be held by our college since the pandemic.”

Persistent rehab helps aging collie recover from dislocated hip

Max the rough collie is still spry at age 10, but last May his exuberance led him to the emergency room at the Cornell University Hospital for Animals. Thanks to veterinarians, Max has become an example of what rehabilitation therapy can do for an injured pet of his age.

Rehab therapy helps aging collie recover from dislocated hip

April 14, 2021
Still spry at 10 years old, Max the rough collie leads an active life with owner Mark Brown. In May of last year, however, Max’s exuberance led him to the emergency room at the Cornell University Hospital for Animals (CUHA). Thanks to veterinarians at Cornell and the careful dedication of his owner, Max became a shining example of what rehabilitation therapy can do for an injured pet of his age.

Max’s misadventure began when he ran toward a truck while on a lead in the yard. He jumped up but misjudged the length of the lead, which pulled him down hard on his right rear leg.
