Amsterdam police clear square of anti-lockdown demonstrators

AMSTERDAM, Feb 21 (Reuters) - Police in Amsterdam forcibly cleared anti-lockdown demonstrators from the city’s Museum Square on Sunday after they ignored instructions to leave amid a ban on public gatherings due to the coronavirus epidemic.
Large numbers of people were out in the city’s streets and parks after an abrupt turn in the weather to sunny skies and mild temperatures following a colder spell a week earlier. The Museum Square has become a regular meeting place for people opposed to social distancing and other lockdown rules.
At Sunday’s demonstration, some were carrying signs saying “freedom” or held yellow umbrellas, but others appeared simply to have joined the throng of several hundred mostly young people.

With the next coronavirus press conference scheduled for February 23, rumours have started to emerge from The Hague as to what the Netherlands can expect acting Prime Minister Mark Rutte to announce about the coronavirus lockdown.
The Netherlands to ease some coronavirus restrictions
According to sources in The Hague, on Sunday at Rutte’s official residence cabinet ministers and members of the Outbreak Management Team (OMT) discussed whether or not any coronavirus restrictions could be eased and which restrictions would be extended. Rumours suggest that, now that the curfew is protected by a new emergency law, the Dutch government is looking to extend it by a further three weeks, and hopes that doing so will allow for other measures to be lifted.
