For years, site selectors have paid little attention to Erie County. A national award for the creation of the Erie County Community College could change that.
Starting Monday, Erie Zoo visitors are no longer required to buy their tickets online and arrive at a scheduled time in order to see the otters, red pandas or hippopotamuses.
They also won t have to socially distance themselves on the zoo s train or carousel, and entire families will be able to enter the Children s Zoo concession stand. We re starting to get back to something close to normal, Erie Zoo CEO Scott Mitchell said. We already have seen pretty good attendance, especially because the weather has been cooperative. People really want to get out.
The zoo, 423 W. 38th St., is changing its policies because nearly all of Pennsylvania s COVID-19 mitigation regulations will end Sunday. Businesses will be allowed to operate at 100% of their maximum capacity starting on Memorial Day and social distancing will be encouraged, not required.
More than two dozen Erie-area children will be among the first 2- to 11-year-olds in the United States to receive the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine.
A clinical trial for the vaccine will begin Tuesday at Allegheny Health Network s Health + Wellness Pavilion West Side s pediatric office, 4247 W. Ridge Road. At least 40 local children will participate in the nationwide trial, though one-third of them will receive a placebo. We already have a waiting list of more than 40 patients whose families have signed them up, said Anne Zomcik, M.D., a Saint Vincent pediatrician at the office.
At least 4,000 children will participate in the trial at 100 sites nationwide.

Erie County reports highest daily COVID-19 death total since early March
Erie County Executive Kathy Dahlkemper reported Wednesday that three county residents died from COVID-19, the highest daily number of reported deaths since March 3 and a reminder that the pandemic continues despite a massive vaccination campaign.
The deaths follow a relatively stable number of daily COVID-19 cases and a slight increase in the county s COVID-19 hospitalizations over the last five weeks, according to the Pennsylvania Department of Health. I have to admit that it s a bit alarming to me at this point of the pandemic, Dahlkemper said Wednesday. Now that the vaccine is available to all adults, our case numbers shouldn t be staying as high as they are . and still shouldn t be seeing a significant death count.
