B.C. 'circuit-breaker': Will coronavirus restrictions be extended beyond April 19?

VANCOUVER --
Monday, April 12, marks two weeks since B.C. health officials introduced so-called "circuit-breaker" restrictions: new rules banning indoor dining, religious gatherings and group fitness activities until April 19.
Since the measures were put in place, case numbers have continued to climb. On Friday, B.C. recorded 1,262 new cases.
Two weeks is the incubation period for the virus and generally considered the length of time needed to see if restrictions have had an impact.
Dr. Anna Wolak, a Vancouver physician, believes that may not be the case this time.
“The 19th is too early to see any changes, I think it does need to be extended a bit further,” she told CTV News Vancouver on Sunday. “We are seeing more and more evidence that COVID is aerosol, it’s spread by aerosol, so the indoor spaces are dangerous spaces at the moment.”

Coronavirus cases detected at another ski resort in B.C.'s Interior

VANCOUVER --
A doctor in B.C.'s Interior is warning that COVID-19 cases are on the rise at a ski resort northeast of Kamloops.
In a letter posted on the Sun Peaks Resort Municipality website Saturday, Dr. Shane Barclay writes that 15 of 40 coronavirus tests conducted at the resort on Friday came back positive.
"I suspect there are more," Barclay writes.
The doctor says the people who tested positive are "from all areas of employment and business within Sun Peaks," and he advises anyone with any symptoms in the area to get tested as soon as possible.
The resort acknowledged a rise in cases in a statement on its website Friday, though it did not specify how many people had tested positive.

Vancouver hate crimes, stalking incidents prompt organization to launch 'buddy' system

VANCOUVER --
A non-profit organization led by Vancouver youth launched a new program over the weekend to ensure people feel safe in their communities.
The Bolt Safety Society is offering a "Safe Buddies" program, which matches volunteers with seniors, women and anyone else who doesn't feel safe walking home alone.
The program is in response to recent anti-Asian hate crimes, which have spiked dramatically since the start of the pandemic.
It was also prompted by a recent stalking incident in the city, in which a woman was followed for 40 minutes.
"It's just astounding how all these things are happening so closely and quickly together. We really felt this initiative was necessary," co-founder Vedanshi Vala said.

Future pandemics: B.C. researcher to lead network aimed at helping Canada prepare for health threats

VANCOUVER --
A professor at B.C.'s Simon Fraser University is leading a new national program with the goal of helping Canadians better prepare for future pandemics.
Professor Caroline Colijn will oversee the Canadian Network for Modelling Infectious Disease, supported by $2.5 billion in federal funding over the next two years. The network will inform decisions related to public health threats.
"In the past year we've really seen modelling come to the forefront of public conversation in a way that we never have before. People know about variants and they know about exponential growth and they know about flattening the curve," Colijn told CTV News Vancouver.

COVID-19 in Whistler: Residents offered early vaccines in ski town hit hard by P.1 variant

VANCOUVER --
Residents in Whistler, B.C. are being offered early COVID-19 vaccines, according to the health authority responsible for the ski resort town.
Vancouver Coastal Health says that the area around Whistler has the highest rate of coronavirus infections in the province.
“Currently Howe Sound has the highest rate of COVID-19 of any local health area in the province; the majority of these cases reside in the Whistler community," reads a statement from the health authority.
Whistler’s mayor says it’s offering hope to his town, which is struggling with the economic impact from being ordered to close its ski hills.
