Yosemite National Park prepared for a major snow melt in the region by announcing the closure of most of Yosemite Valley from Friday to May 3 because of potential flooding along the Merced River.

The National Park Service said Yosemite could close due to flooding risk again in May or June after recording heavy snowpack this spring.
The Sierra Nevada region where the park is located experienced snowfall at over 300% than usual this past winter. Flooding may happen into May and June, the park said.
