New tremors shook Croatia early yesterday as the Adriatic country was still picking up the pieces of a deadly earthquake that claimed at least seven lives and reduced buildings to rubble the day before.
The new magnitude 4.8 and 4.7 quakes struck after 05.15am GMT in the same zone south of Zagreb that was badly damaged by Tuesday’s magnitude 6.4 quake, the US Geological Survey said. ....

At least seven people are known to have died in a magnitude 6.4 earthquake that struck central Croatia on Tuesday.
Rescue teams spent the night scouring the rubble of damaged buildings in the search for survivors.
A 12-year-old girl was killed in Petrinja, the prime minister said as he visited the town.
Five people died in the nearby town of Glina, his deputy said. A seventh victim was found in the rubble of a church in Zazina, state media reports.
Petrinja s mayor said that about half the town had been destroyed and people had been pulled from the rubble. ....

Croatian parliament bans firecrackers


ZAGREB, Dec 20 (Hina/CW) – On Friday, the Croatian parliament amended the relevant legislation banning the use of firecrackers in the F2 and F3 categories in order to protect people’s lives and reduce casualties and injuries, especially of minors.
The amendments, in addition to the previous ban on firecrackers in category F3, prohibit the sale, purchase, possession and use of category F2 firecrackers to citizens for personal use.
According to the Act, other noisy pyrotechnics may only be used from 27 December to 1 January. All F2 and F3 category pyrotechnic devices were previously banned to be used throughout the year apart from those dates.  ....
