I was an intern when i observed dr. c. walton carry out the first cross-circulation case. i made an illustration of that first operation -- at least of the defect in the little boy's heart, put it in the patient's chart. he didn't know me, seeing that illustration he invited me into his lab and that's when the pacemaker was developed. it was just a great opportunity for me. it was an amazing time and amazing procedure, but i had no idea where it would take us over the next 60 years. well, i spent my life doing cardiac surgery. and how fortunate i was to have been there on day one as an observe...
