The protests on the streets of many french cities, shep. shepard: it has been interesting to watch as the french president has taken a very hard line with these protesters. not in the way that other french leaders have in past. very different, indeed to previous french leaders a lot of people, in fact, are calling this sarkozy s fatua moment. margaret thatcher battled with the unions back in the mid 1980s and literally changed the culture of britain in so doing. president sarkozy has ordered riot police n the same manner that thatcher did. clearly he is not going to negotiate with the unions in any way. that is why we are seeing the violence on the streets. sarkozy seems absolutely determined to change the french system of benefits. it s a very extensive system. the unions feel losing much more than just the retirement age, shep. shepard: most protests might seem unorganized. but they are usually organized by somebody in this case. is it just the unions? it s largely the unions ....
