Is. now, you can say, well, steve jobs learned calligraphy so we don t have to, but there are other things you can do once you ve learned it, so i don t think it s ended. so, in an era, though, where kids are increasingly using technology and bringing with them any manner of mobile devices to help them do that, how do teachers go about teaching cursive? they can t go about it as their ancestors did in the 19th century. then cursive was really needed as a business handwriting because there weren t any typewriters yet. and students were really forced to learn it as a mechanical process, and even in the 20th century a lot of instruction was not terribly enlightened, so it got a bad reputation in some quarters. but it doesn t have to be that way. but, you know, you talk about the 19th century, from a historical perspective, edward, i mean, so many things, documents are written in cursive, is that more than just writing? i mean, to the extent that you see it as a cultural historical ....
