nice to be here with you for the next five hours. tropical storm irene after lashing new york city, irene is dutching heavy, heavy rainfall in parts of upstate new york and also new england. the storm made landfall overnight as a hurricane in two stops, first on the landfall on little egg inlet in new jersey, and then it hit another landfall, coney island, new york. at that time irene had weakened to a tropical storm. on long island, irene s storm surge flooded downtown long beach. some streets in manhattan also flooding, but the water really has started to recede already. it is sweeping up the east coast. irene has killed at least 15 people at last count as it started, as it fist made landfall in north carolina, more than 4 million people as a whole without power. irene moving north now. its biggest threat is inland flo flooding. still the word is caution, and we have cnn crews up and down the east coast for you to bring you up-to-the-minute coverage on tropical ....

shepard: rick, one of the things that s coming to mind to me about this storm is how the duration of time that people are just getting the crap beat out of them. up here in the northeast, hurricanes typically move pretty quick. by the time they get this far north the rotation of the earth and curvature spins them out really fast. that s not the case this time. we ll have a storm that s moving 18, 19 miles per hour it s a slow mover for us and makes the duration you are doing with this long. when you have such a big storm also it makes it longer. big storm moving slowly just going to be impacting for a very long time. look at this satellite image from nasa yesterday shepard. get it down to florida and out here across way out across parts of the atlantic. big storm moving slowly and that s why the effects are so big. even if it s just a category 1. shepard: yeah. you are so spot on to say don t pay attention to the numbers. i m guessing i m guessing you ....
