Major banks are warning up to 300,000 jobs in Sydney will be lost due to extended pandemic lockdowns, as prices for staples such as fruit, vegetables and petrol rise at double the rate of wages growth.
The Commonwealth Bank is predicting almost one in 10 workers in greater Sydney will become unemployed and the ANZ now expects earlier forecasts of tens of thousands of job losses to be exceeded.

Inflation has climbed to its highest level since before the global financial crisis, rising 0.8 per cent in the September quarter. This takes annual inflation to 3.8 per cent, Australian Bureau of Statistics data shows, which is the highest annual rate since 2008 when petrol prices surged to $US150 a barrel.

A disaster-hit grower who hosted Agriculture Minister Mark Furner on his flattened banana farm says the MP's claims he was unaware of requests for wage subsidies are wrong.
Key points:
Representatives campaigned for a Qantas-style JobKeeper wage subsidy, to keep irreplaceable workers until crops recover
Mr Furner said he wasn't aware of the subsidy call, but office confirms receipt of March 8 letter

New Caledonia government third attempt to elect a president fails

The 11 member collegial government met this morning in Noumea but the majority FLNKS pro-independence groupings again could not agree on a single candidate.
This means the new government cannot be properly constituted leaving the old government in a caretaker role with budget responsibility given to the French High Commission.
As with both the earlier attempts in February and March today's vote saw anti-independence leader Thierry Santa securing four votes with an even split of three votes each for the pro-independence candidates Louis Mapou and Samuel Hnepeune and one abstention.
The political uncertainty in New Caledonia could not have come at a worse time with serious outbreaks of Covid-19 in the community and neighbouring Wallis and Futuna and the territory still reeling from the impacts of Cyclone Niran last month.
