J.D. Martinez homered twice off Eduardo Rodriguez and drove in five runs as the Los Angeles Dodgers rolled to an 8-3 victory over the Detroit Tigers on Monday night. Rodriguez (11-9), who used his no-trade rights to nix a deal to the Dodgers on Aug. 1, lasted just three-plus innings. Martinez said he wasn't motivated by Rodriguez’s decision not to come to Los Angeles.
When the postseason rolls around, the Los Angeles Dodgers know they'll need more than just Mookie Betts and Freddie Freeman carrying the load at the top of the lineup. Which is why a night where the likes of J.D. Martinez and Miguel Rojas carry the offense is important this late in the season. “You got the two horses up front with Freddie and (Mookie) and you got to be able to have your three, four or five hitters protect those guys,” Martinez said.
Lance Lynn pitched a seven-inning, two-run, five-hit effort while Freddie Freeman hit a two-run homer as the Dodgers routed the San Diego Padres 11-2.
Freddie Freeman's locker was flanked by 8-foot-high pillars of blue balloons. A hefty box of cookies and a birthday cake sat nearby, gifts from the Dodgers' kitchen staff for the slugger with a sweet tooth. From the clubhouse gifts to the crowd's songs and dances, Freeman got plenty of love at Dodger Stadium on his 34th birthday.
The Los Angeles Dodgers listed J.D. Martinez as a starter for Monday's game against the San Diego Padres.
