Certificates of authenticity can be unreliable in cases where distant relatives of dead artists or sometimes even gallerists generate them. Checking the provenance of the painting - establishing each step of where it went from the artist's studios or gallery, who bought it, when and from whom - is the best way to know whether an artwork is real or a fake.
