Construct more community toilets

Daily Monitor
The issue: Community toilets
Our view: An adequate number of community toilets and pit-latrines that meet required standards should be constructed and properly maintained.

According to World Health Organisation guidelines on sanitation and health, toilets should be available, accessible and affordable to all, constantly, and at least separate excreta from human contact. Their design should be culturally appropriate, suitable to locally-available materials and physical conditions such as water availability and ground/soil conditions, and in line with ability and willingness to pay.
Unfortunately, this is not the case in some places in our country. In Daily Monitor  of May 5, we published a story titled,  “1,500 slum dwellers sharing  three toilets”. The story tells in detail how residents of Kasanvu, a slum in Namuwongo , a Kampala suburb, share three community pit-latrines. In the story, a resident, Dolphin Atieno, is quoted saying many people in the slum resort to open defecation or use of polythene bags  because the toilet is more than 100 or and for others,  300 metres away from their houses and that this has accelerated diarrhoea, especially in children due to poor hygiene.

Kisumu residents were Monday afternoon treated to a shocking incident after a middle-aged man murdered his grandmother, chopped off her head and presented it to police officers at Kisumu Central Station.
In a bizarre incident that left even police officers manning the station's OB desk baffled, the 24-year-old Kelvin Akal presented himself at the station after committing the heinous act.
All through, officers and other people who were at the police station had assumed he had brought food for an inmate booked at the cells.

Will Walubiri secure  the troubled UPC ship?

Mr Walubiri was declared the new party leader on December 17 by the party’s electoral commission chairperson, Mr Hamza Sewankambo, against three others, having garnered 278 votes of the 593 delegates from 98 districts, writes Elizabeth Kamurungi.
In what was a low-key, and strange-timed election, Mr Peter Walubiri was elected the new party president of the Uganda Peoples Congress (UPC).
The declaration made on December 17, a result of an election birthed by the nullification of Mr Jimmy Akena’s presidency, comes just a month before Ugandans go to the polls to choose their leader for the next five years, an opportunity the Independence-deliverer missed out on.
