As American schools work to turn around math scores that plunged during the pandemic, some academics point to a set of research-based practices for teaching math.

Carrie Stark is a math teacher in suburban Kansas City. She’s part of a group of teachers across the country that are working to turn around math scores that tumbled during the pandemic.

For much of her teaching career, Carrie Stark relied on math games to engage her students, assuming they would pick up concepts like multiplication by seeing them in action. The kids had fun, but the lessons never stuck.

While researchers have confirmed that some teaching methods are effective in helping students learn math, it is difficult to isolate the effect a particular curriculum has on student learning.
