A graduate of Polk County High School, he was known to many friends as "Catfish" in recognition of his love for fishing. He held a bachelor's degree in business from Jacksonville, Ala., State University, a master's of divinity from New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary and a master's in education from William Carey University in Hattiesburg, Miss.
