He was educated at Penn State University and served on the West Perry School Board, HACC board of trustees and Perry County Democratic Committee. Through his business he sold and developed solar saving solutions. He was active in the building of the pavilion stage at Little Buffalo State Park. In his younger years, he played volleyball.
