Basque people 'have genetic continuity stretching back to the Iron Age', says study

Isolation and limited gene flows with neighbouring populations are the reasons behind the genetic uniqueness of people in Spain s Basque region, a new study has concluded.
It said people there had genetic continuity that stretches back to the Iron Age (500-332 BC).
The study is believed to be the most comprehensive geographic sampling to date of the Basque population, with over 600,000 genetic markers throughout the genome for each individual .
Professor David Comas, who led the research, said the study found no influences from North Africa , which, on the contrary, are appreciated in most populations of the Iberian Peninsula , nor did it find traces of Roman migrations. ....

The largest-ever study of almost 2,000 DNA samples carried out by researchers at Pompeu Fabra university (UPF) in Barcelona has confirmed the “genetic singularity” of the Basques in Europe. The investigation, however, found that this difference only began to emerge 2,500 years ago in the Iron Age. “Our analyses confirm that Basques were influenced by the major migration waves in Europe until the Iron Age, in a similar pattern as their surrounding populations,” the authors explain in the study published in the journal
The origin of the Basques has fascinated the scientific community since the 19th century. The French anthropologist Paul Broca snuck into a Basque cemetery one night in 1862 to steal skulls he wanted to study for their supposed genetic differences. Juan José Ibarretxe, premier of the Basque regional government until 2009, proclaimed that ....

Genetics cracks origins of two mysterious people: Scythians and Basques

Follow
Apr. 1, 2021
Genetic analysis is all the rage and two separate studies have provided new insights into two peoples: the Scythians of yore, and the Basques of today.
The story of the Scythians is one of motion: strangers riding in and mixing with the locals, only to have the same thing happen to them some centuries later. The story of the Basques is pretty much the opposite: they even seem to have eschewed mixing with nearby communities.
Once thought of as a culture of basically horseback warriors constantly on the move, the Scythians are now believed to have been a culture that did include settling down, in some large towns as well, but whose nomadic warriors hugely impressed their neighbors: from the Persians to the Greeks to the Chinese. Today, the thinking is they consisted of groups characterized by shared motifs, including mortuary practices. ....
