Four Candidates Put Their Names Forward for Appointment to Rep. Diego Hernandez’s Seat Hernandez resigned effective March 15 rather than face an expulsion vote for sexual harassment.

Four candidates have filed to fill out the term of state Rep. Diego Hernandez (D-East Portland), who resigned his House District 47 seat this month rather than face an expulsion vote.
In February, the four-member House Conduct Committee found after an investigation into complaints lodged by five women that Hernandez had violated House rules relating to sexual harassment and creating a hostile workplace. The committee recommended his expulsion.

TURMOIL OVER COPS AT TRANSITION PROJECTS: Since last summer, dozens of employees at Transition Projects Inc., the Portland nonprofit that runs 10 local homeless shelters with a budget of about $20 million, have pushed to expel two board members: Multnomah County Sheriff Mike Reese and Portland Police Bureau Assistant Chief Jami Resch. The employees' objections were not personal but rather a reflection of the negative interactions many homeless people and TPI staff have had with police. TPI executive director George Devendorf says the board took the requests very seriously, brought in an outside consultant, and held a series of meetings with employees, but ultimately decided it "makes more sense to engage with law enforcement than to turn our backs." The issue is far from over, but Reese, who sat on the board for 13 years, left at the end of December when his term expired. Resch will remain. A recent letter to the board signed by 110 of TPI's 375 employees says the struggle to oust law enforcement and make other social justice gains will continue. "We are at a pivotal point in history," they wrote, "where we must make a choice between remaining complacent in an oppressive institution, or rising up with the Black community in demanding justice."

Multnomah County commissioners will soon select someone to replace East Portland Rep. Diego Hernandez, who is stepping down after a legislative committee found he created a hostile workplace at the Capitol.
Four people are vying to fill the seat vacated by Rep. Diego Hernandez, who is resigning later this month from the state House of Representatives after women accused him of harassment.
Oregon Public Broadcasting reports the four are: Robin Castro, a community activist who ran for Portland City Council in 2020; Adrienne Enghouse, a nurse who also tried to fill the seat in the Senate vacated by now Secretary of State Shemia Fagan, Cayle Tern, who works in human services, and Andrea Valderrama, a policy director and registered lobbyist for ACLU of Oregon.

Portland Public Schools:
In the latest update from the school board, it said that it has expanded in-person learning opportunities but has not yet started hybrid learning for all K-5 students as it had intended.
In January, PPS chief of schools Dr. Shawn Bird spoke on the moves PPS was making to try and make hybrid learning possible. It hopes to begin the transition in April.
“School administrators have been identifying the students that are eligible, and they’re reaching out to families individually, making sure that families understand this is optional and we want to make sure they feel safe,” he said.
