The death of Taoism

There are some things that our language simply cannot convey. Some things that are beyond the world of numbers and letter. Some things that just are. And, at the same time, are not. This is the world of the Tao, symbolized so perfectly in the Yin Yang. I will not even be able to explain it here in words. I can only point to it and hope that it appears.

Koreans still love Korea

I’ve always been puzzled why the media only reflects the tragedy of Korean life. Why those with the most social influence are those decrying everything that has been built. And why those whose voice is heard loudest tell us that the country, the culture, and the very fabric of society is rotten to the core. Politicians build careers out of this. Influencers make millions.

Fiction versus reality for Korean Gen Z

A professor recently asked me if I have a “bu-gae” on my Instagram. The answer was obvious: “Yes, of course!” I paused for a minute though. First I was worried that he might ask what my ID was. No way he was getting that. Then I was curious how he even knew about such things. Weird!

Can Korea escape Seoul?

I write this from a small town called Wontong. It’s a beautiful place nestled in the mountains of Gangwondo. The various peaks rise forever on the horizon, creating a sense of infinity and bringing new appreciation to the Korean expression 'san nomo san' (beyond the mountains there are mountains). The sky is blue and high. The rivers and streams run continuously through the valleys, surging past the ice and making their way for warmer climates.

The infinite revolutions of Seoul's humans

There are no more deserts. There are no more islands. And yet, and yet, we need them. For us to understand the world, we need poetry as much as we need peace. And where better to find this than Seoul.
