Date Time Texas universities to compete at drone showcase at UTA Students from The University of Texas at Arlington, UT Dallas and UT El Paso will demonstrate their own autonomously flying unmanned aerial systems at a drone showcase April 29-May 1 at UTA’s Maverick Stadium. The teams will compete in three events during the showcase: • The first event will verify that the drone works as it is supposed to. • The second will require the drone to lift off, ascend to a prescribed altitude and autonomously find and land on a 2-foot-by-2-foot school logo. • The third will require the drone t...
David Wetz, professor of electrical engineering An electrical engineering professor at The University of Texas at Arlington is helping develop a safer battery to power drones used to inspect mines for hazards. David Wetz is part of a team working to design a battery that is intrinsically safe because it cannot cause sparking, a danger in mines filled with hazardous, explosive gases. New Mexico Tech is the lead institution on the grant, which is funded by the Alpha Foundation for the Improvement of Mine Safety and Health Inc. The University of New Mexico is also a partner on the team. UTA’s ...

Credit: UT Arlington David Wetz, professor of electrical engineering at The University of Texas at Arlington, has received a $424,618 Defense University Research Instrumentation Program (DURIP) grant from the Office of Naval Research to purchase equipment for studying materials at high voltages. The equipment will be used in support of a grant he received in August from the Naval Surface War Center-Dahlgren Division (NSWC-DD) to study the high-voltage dielectric insulation properties of epoxy and additively manufactured materials. Dielectric materials can transmit electric force without condu...
