Twice as many St. Joseph County residents will be eligible for an “early-bird” rate to have their leaves picked up this year, after the county Board of Commissioners agreed to pay an extra $75,000 in customer subsidies to the private vendor running the program. Under a modified contract the commissioners approved Tuesday with St. Joe County Recycling, the first 3,000 residents to subscribe to the program will pay a discounted fee of $99, an increase from the 1,500 subscribers who got that rate for the 2020 season. SOUTH BEND — Although more than a quarter of St. Joseph County residents are now fully vaccinated against COVID-19, officials are concerned about a “plateau” in the number of vaccinations as fewer people are signing up to receive their shot. St. Joseph County Council overrides veto; fines for businesses extended

SOUTH BEND — The St. Joseph County Council voted Friday to override a veto from the county commissioners and extend an ordinance that allows fines for some violations of the county's mask order.  The council voted 7-1 to extend the enforcement mechanism until May 27, with Richard Pfeil joining the council’s six Democrats in supporting the measure.
