Individual that did it, i got him from his back throat to his throat. he was gone. after nine years, knighten made a shocking career move. he retired. through a process called debriefing he shared his gang secrets with authorities and was transferred to the prison s protective custody program. knighten will most likely spend the rest of his prison term in protective custody, knowing he will always have a target on his back. so now, the once dedicated warrior tries to focus his energy on spirituality. that s one thing that i struggle with now. i understand how hypocrisy works, speaking to you now. you know it s wrong. yeah, hey, i got some atonement i guess you could say to make up for it. things are looking rough i could say if i do believe in afterlife. would you kill someone today? oh, yeah. sure. you didn t even hesitate, christian. you want me to lie? no. pretend? you know what i mean? ....

Gang member, went before the inmate review board to request debriefing. i can certainly see your point of view. however, a good many of inmates in the program have, in fact, been in my position in the past and have also called hits on other inmates and then and actually done hits themselves. so i m assuming that you have had the same concerns about them, or am i being singled out for some reason? let s not go there. you are going to be given the opportunity to debrief, you know? now, she s only giving you the honest truth. and the truth is there is concern. it also depends on how sincere you are when you do your history statement. all the stuff that you just told us about ordering hits, that kind of thing, you re going to have to do that. you re going to have to put that to writing. just for my own understanding, what is the main source of your change of heart? ....

Make you believe this, it s not true. just because one of their family members were a part of it. i seen too many innocent people targeted that had nothing to do with the gang life. once a gang member decides to quit, he can leave the shu in one of two ways. remain inactive for six years, or drop out altogether. to drop out, inmates must go through a debriefing process which has three missions, first, to determine their sincerity to leave the gang. second, to identify the people who might be a threat to them, since leaving a gang is considered treason. and third, to gather information about the gang. after debriefing, the inmates learn basic education and coping skills in a 14-week program designed to ease their transition back into a mainline facility. what seems to be biggest problem in your life right now? getting myself on track, keeping myself on track, once i m there, that s the biggest ....

Should any of them refuse orders to carry out hits on other inmates, the prison says they are likely to be assaulted or killed as punishment. their only other option is a process called debriefing, during which they agree to cut all ties with their gang and provide prison officials with detailed information. in exchange, these inmates are moved to a special needs housing unit and permanently segregated from the rest of the prison population. an individual can be in good favor with the gang for years, can do their dirty work, smuggle drugs, stab people, beat people, do whatever, but if he says the wrong thing to the wrong person someday, or looks funny at somebody, somebody thinks he is disrespected by him, he s through. they ll stab him, they ll kill him, they ll toss him away like he s nothing. a lot of them get tired of prison politics. ....

i do have some questions about your sincerity for debriefing. i have questions of my own if i may. the officials are concerned some of the debriefed inmates whom spiller would join in housing were former hits of his. you will not be denied a debrief process it it may take a while because we have to look at it very, very hard. for my own understanding, what is the main source of your change of heart? basically, i m tired of doing other people s dirty work. i m simply just a middleman passing on orders. and it doesn t make sense. i was ordered to kill a dear friend of mine and i really didn t appreciate that. the committee decided spiller would be allowed to debrief. he was then moved into protective custody in the special needs unit. you have a good day. thank you. since then, he s been transferred to another prison in california for his safety. once they elect to go ahead and debrief and cross that line, you cannot put that inmate back ....
