threads: Threads Rollercoaster: From explosive launch to subdued presence, lessons for the competing X app
Instagram's Threads app, which launched in July and was seen as a direct competitor to Twitter's platform, saw 79% drop in usage by August, with fewer than half of its 100 million users returning for a second month. Analytics company SimilarWeb found Threads' daily active users peaked at 49.3 million on 7 July, but had fallen to 10.3 million by 7 August, with users spending an average of just three minutes on the app. Instagram CEO Mark Zuckerberg admitted during a recent earnings call that Threads needed engaging content to retain its initial surge of users.
