1061 Parvesh Sharma Sangrur, April 3 The ETT TET Qualified Unemployed Teachers Union accused Congress workers of assaulting them during a protest they held against the Punjab government on Friday. The union said that some Congress leaders attacked them when they chanted slogans during Education Minister Vijay Inder Singla’s visit. The minister was attending a function at Sunami Gate. Sources said six members of the union came to the venue where the minister was expected for a function. They were refused entry at first, but two managed to enter later, sources said. Once inside, they began chanting slogans, which irked some of the Congress workers present at the function, the sources said.

PATIALA: Police, on Sunday, detained around 150 protesters of the teachers eligibility test (TET) pass elementary teacher training (ETT) union and released them far away from the protest site. They were cane-charged as they staged a demonstration demanding jobs at YPS Chowk near the residence of Punjab chief minister Captain Amarinder Singh in Patiala on Saturday. The protesters alleged that they were lathi-charged by the police on Sunday morning and forcibly taken in buses to be dropped around 15 kilometres away from the protest site. “We had to spend all of Saturday night on the road. The police did not even allow our co-protesters to bring quilts for us to spend the night. Many of us have been injured. Some of our protesters are sitting in Gurudwara Dukhniwaran Sahib and waiting for more members of unemployed unions to join them,” said Deep Banarasi, state press secretary of the union.

Police resorted to the action to prevent protesters from marching to the CM’s residence. Union members have been protesting against the state government to demand jobs. On December 6 too, they staged a protest in Patiala for their demands. On Saturday, protesters gathered at Baradari Park, from where they marched towards the CM residence at 2pm. They were not allowed to cross YPS Chowk in Patiala city as police had done barricading to prevent the protest march. Around 4pm, after talks failed between the protesters and duty magistrate, police resorted to a lathi-charge and left some protesters injured. The protestors later sat at the YPS Chowk for indefinite period.
