: The threat of losing their driving licence seems to have done little to make Malaysian motorists better drivers and more law abiding.
More than four years since the implementation of the Demerit Points System for Traffic Offences (Kejara), motorists continue to ignore traffic rules blatantly, leading to an increasing number of summonses issued by law enforcement agencies.
Many have not only accumulated multiple summonses, but also have not settled the fines.
Former Malaysian Institute of Road Safety Research director-general Dr Wong Shaw Voon put the blame squarely on the implementation and enforcement of the Kejara system. ....

Works and Transport Minister Rohan Sinanan is pleased with the significant reduction in road fatalities for 2020, but said his ministry was committed to continuing efforts with the police and other agencies to raise awareness and improve road safety.
In a media release on Wednesday, Sinanan said he noted figures reported by the police in December of only 96 traffic deaths for 2020, the lowest figure since 1957.
He credited the decrease to improved community education programmes and the introduction of the UTurn and Demerit Points systems to tackle errant drivers, as well as building partnerships with other agencies which could assist in recording traffic violations. ....

(Trinidad Guardian) Since the Demerit Points System (DPS) went into effect in June 2020, law enforcement officers have issued close to 54,000 fixed penalty notices (FPNs) or tickets to errant drivers and traffic violators across the country.

Of this figure, 1,000 drivers are due to have their driving permits disqualified, while 60 motorists have been banned from sitting behind the wheel of a vehicle, with 10,629 drivers being warned about traffic violations and their behaviour on the roads.

The data was collected from June to December 22 by Transport Commissioner Clive Clarke, following the modernisation of the traffic ticketing system under the Motor Vehicle and Road Traffic Act. ....
