India's top court declines to order any change to vote-counting process.
Rejecting the pleas for paper ballot voting, complete EVM-VVPAT verification, and physical deposit of VVPAT slips, the court observed, “Blindly distrusting a system can lead to unwarranted suspicions.”
With the Supreme Court rejecting a plea for 100% verification of VVPAT slips with EVM count, voting for the Lok Sabha elections will continue to take place using EVMs, with 100% of the machines attached to a VVPAT unit.
Writing his views in a separate verdict while concurring with the opinion of Justice Sanjiv Khanna, who was heading the bench, Justice Datta said the EVMs have stood the test of time and the increased voting percentage was sufficient reason to hold that the voters have reposed faith in the current system.
While the apex court’s judgment does not change anything for voters, candidates will be allowed to seek verification of 5% EVMs post polls
