Hopedale voters to consider temporary tax raise May 22

HOPEDALE – With about a week and a half until voters weigh in at Town Meeting, local officials have dramatically lowered a tax override proposal meant to keep departments running.
When budgets for Fiscal Year 2022 were first compiled last month, finance officials were looking at a roughly $1.2 million gap between what department heads asked for and what the town could raise.
Departments were then asked for major cuts, and officials are now considering asking voters for about $288,000 in raised taxes.
The money would be funded through a debt exclusion, rather than a permanent tax raise. Debt exclusions temporarily raise taxes and eventually come off the tax base. ....
