with trump, they fought it out. they argued over which should lead the justice department, whether rosen should stay the attorney general, or whether trump should replace him with this jeff clark guy. going into that meeting, several justice department officials were so worried that trump would take rosen out and put clark in there instead, that they agreed they would all resign if that occurred. very hair-raising stuff. there will be movies made about this someday. but the reporting about that meeting suggested that when the dust settled and the attorney general was not replaced, rosen stayed in his position, one senior official wrote at the time, it sounds like the cause of justice has won.
the committee, quote, has identified several individuals with direct knowledge of the phone calls you denied receiving from the white house about the justice department s prosecution of long-time trump attorney michael cohen. mr. whitaker said under oath in his testimony that he did not have communications with the white house about the cohen prosecution. jerry nadler has advised him tonight that they have identified several individuals who have direct knowledge of whitaker in fact having phone calls with the white house about that prosecution. if whitaker gave false testimony under oath, that s going to be a big deal. as far as we know, there has been no response yet from the justice department in general or matthew whitaker in particular, but it will be interesting to see how that response goes. it will be particularly interesting just to see if mr. whitaker tries to invade, tries to evade congressional oversight on this by virtue of the fact he is about to be no longer a justice dep

issues of his past opponent. it seems like that anxiety has almost been channelled in a different direction. i think leading up to the holidays, to christmas and new year s, we saw president trump be pretty antagonistic toward the mueller investigation, and now he seems to be reining that in. that could be coming from the advice hifz lawyeof his lawyers he s sort of focusing on the justice department in general. he said in his time interview he has control of the justice department. there should be a disconnect, a wall between these two, especially when it comes to law enforcement. literally he is correct. he has control over everything. but there has been the norm, the practice has been that there is a separation, that presidents don t comment on pending investigations. that s exactly right. and julia understands that as well as anyone, andrea. you don t comment on pending investigations because you don t want to influence pending
