Acute gastro, cholera cases up in Iloilo City

CHLORINATION. A chart showing the chlorination status of water wells in Iloilo City. Eight of the 14 samples from wells taken in areas with cholera cases were found positive for the disease as reported by the City Health Office during a press conference on Monday (Sept. 26, 2022). (Screen grab from Iloilo City Government live streaming) ILOILO CITY - The number of acute gastroenteritis (AGE) cases here has reached 713 with the addition of 12 more on Sept. 25 while cholera cases climbed to 30 with seven new confirmed cases, the City Health Office reported on Monday. "Of the seven (cholera) cases, two were from Mandurriao, three from Arevalo, and two from Molo," said CHO acting health officer, Dr. Annabelle Tang, in a press conference on Monday. Further, of the 14 specimens from water wells in areas with cases that were taken by the Department of Health (DOH) and sent to the Research Institute for Tropical Medicine (RITM) on Sept. 14, eight were found positive for cholera, bringing to nine the total number of wells that were already found positive for the disease. "After this (press conference) we will be condemning wells. It is very unfortunate that despite our chlorination, it has not stopped since probably we have already reached our water table and as we have said before they are very near the canals and septic tanks. Even if we chlorinate, there is constant exposure to contaminants," Tang said. Of the 713 acute gastroenteritis cases in the city, 652 have recovered while 13 died. Dr. Marie Jocelyn Te, Medical Officer IV of the Department of Health Western Visayas Center for Health Development, in a separate interview said cholera is one of the notifiable diseases under AGE. If not treated at once, cholera, which is characterized bypainless abdominal discomfort, can accelerate into moderate to severe dehydration, she added. Meanwhile, Tang said the DOH will conduct on Tuesday bacteriological tests for water wells where the new eight cases sourced their supply, as well as in other barangays with a high incidence of acute gastroenteritis. Of the 16,528 water wells in the city, 7,892 have been chlorinated, 8,506 are yet to be inspected and 130 were already condemned. Mayor Jerry P. Trenas, in the same press conference, said they are glad that those affected by AGE were diagnosed early on as they have been promptly treated, which prevented more deaths. He said he will meet with officials of the Metro Pacific Iloilo Water, one of the water distribution utilities in the city and ask them to hasten their development works as the city needs to have working water pipes. "We really have to do something about it," Trenas said. (PNA) }

Region 6 to further increase vax coverage during weeklong drive

'PINASLAKAS' CAMPAIGN. The Department of Health Western Visayas Center for Health Development (DOH WV CHD) launches its 'PinasLakas' Vaccination Campaign at Robinsons Place in Jaro, Iloilo City on July 26, 2022. The department will hold its weeklong special vaccination from Sept. 26-30 to boost the PinasLakas accomplishment rate. (PNA file photo by PGLena) ILOILO CITY - The Department of Health Western Visayas Center for Health Development (DOH WV CHD) is hoping to further increase its accomplishment rate under the "Bakunahang Bayan: PinasLakas National Vaccination Days" campaign with the conduct of special inoculation against Covid-19 on Sept. 26-30. "Our objective is to facilitate the rapid mobilization of the Covid-19 vaccination among our eligible population," Dr. Bea Camille Natalaray, head of the DOH WV CHD infectious disease section, said in an interview on Monday. The Pinaslakas campaign that was launched in July this year initially targeted to vaccinate 96,522 senior citizens for their primary series and 2,049,876 for the first booster of the eligible population, except for the 5-11 pediatric age group, during the first 100 days of the current administration. "Our accomplishment is very low, at 1,552 or 1.61 percent so we need to vaccinate 94,970 of our senior citizens. For booster, we have accomplished 142,887 or 6.97 percent of our over 2 million target. So we still have a goal to vaccinate around 1.9 million," she said. Natalaray said their central office has readjusted the target for the first booster dose to 30 percent for the first 100 days and the 50 percent will already be achieved for the rest of the year while the 90 percent target for primary series of senior citizens remains the same. Currently, the local government units (LGUs) that are closer to the 50 percent target are Iloilo City with 47.94 percent and Bacolod City with 23. 12 percent. "Our LGUs should have this target in mind to go beyond our endemic state. So we need to have this wall of immunity so that eventually we can progress on our endemic state," she said. Natalaray said a series of launching activities will be held this week, with focus on those needing improvement in their coverage for senior citizens such as Antique and Negros Occidental. The elderly vaccination rate of Antique is at 58.55 percent or 30,921 out of the 52,725 target eligible population while Negros Occidental has 60.76 percent or 139,800 out of the 229,162 target. Nonetheless, Natalaray attributed the region's low cases of Covid-19 to vaccination, and observance of minimum health protocols. She said that 94.14 percent of the target eligible population availed of their primary series or are fully vaccinated while the elderly has a 77.35-percent coverage. Western Visayas, as of Sept. 25, 2022, has 1,422 active cases, which is 0.72 percent of the 195,999 total cumulative cases. "The whole of Region 6 is at minimal risk for Covid-19," Natalaray said, noting that the number of cases is decreasing. In August, the average daily case was at 156 per day, and 71 this September. Communal water system in Antique town positive for E. coli

CONTAMINATED WATER. The Local Health Board of Valderrama town holds an emergency meeting upon receipt of the result of a water sample taken from a communal water source in Barangay Iglinab which was positive for E.coli on Sept. 15, 2022. Eric Espia, Valderrama information officer, said in an interview Friday (Sept. 16) that Mayor Jocelyn Posadas has ordered residents to stop sourcing their drinking water from the contaminated spring water.(Photo courtesy of Valderrama LGU) SAN JOSE DE BUENAVISTA, ANTIQUE- A sample taken from spring water in Barangay Iglinab in the municipality of Valderrama was found positive for E.coli bacteria. The Integrated Provincial Health Office (IPHO) carried out the laboratory test on Monday and was released on Thursday. The pipes leading to the homes of the residents were not properly laid so these fell into a dirty canal, said Valderrama Sanitary Inspector Joel Castillon in an interview Friday. He said that E.coli bacteria could be due to human or animal feces. Valderrama information officer Eric Espia, in a separate interview, said the Department of Health Western Visayas Center for Health Development (DOH WV CHD) on Friday again took samples from the spring water, which is the main source of the communal water system, for confirmation. "As a result of the laboratory test by the IPHO, the Department of Health also took a water sample today (Friday) in Barangay Iglinab for confirmation," he said. While waiting for the confirmatory result, he said Mayor Jocelyn Posadas has reiterated her order for residents of Barangay Iglinab to temporarily stop getting their drinking water from the spring. The Municipal Health Office has also been continuously monitoring the situation in the barangay and residents have been provided with Oresol and anti-diarrhea medicines. "From Aug. 30 to Sept. 13, there was a total of 46 individuals who had been provided with medical attention in Valderrama hospital due to diarrhea," Espia said. However, only four patients were admitted as of Sept. 13 while the 42 others were already discharged. The municipality has also recorded four fatalities; one each from Iglinab and Pandanan villages and another two from San Remigio town from Sept. 5 to 8. The communal water system also supplies adjacent barangays of General Fullon and Banbanan in the municipality of San Remigio where 73 of its residents suffered from diarrhea as reported last Sept. 10.
