New Delhi, May 5 : Union Minister of Chemicals & Fertilisers, D.V. Sadananda Gowda, on Wednesday reviewed the availability of drugs for Covid treatment and other essential medicines.
Gowda said that 16.5 lakh vials of Remdesivir have been allocated to all the states between May 3 and May 9, adding that since April 21, a total allocation of 34.5 lakh vials has been made to the states.
Allocation to the states is a dynamic process and efforts will be made to further enhance supply in the coming weeks, he said. ....

There continues to be a plateauing in daily Covid-19 cases in 12 States in the last 14 days, Health Ministry data showed. These States are Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, Chhattisgarh, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Telangana, Jharkhand, Daman & Diu, Ladakh, Lakshadweep and Andaman & Nikobar. However, Health Ministry official Lav Agarwal said this is not the time to loosen up seeing the early decline as it may cost dearly to the country, going forward.
“In the case of infections, even a single day laxity may squander the efforts made to come to a low level of Coronavirus cases. That’s why there is a need to make continuous efforts towards containing the further spread,” said Agarwal, who is a Joint Secretary in the Health Ministry. ....

Remdesivir output to be ramped up as Covid-19 cases rise sharply


Drug majors are stepping on the gas to produce more doses of key antiviral drug remdesivir as India witnesses a new peak in daily Covid-19 cases.
At least four companies Hetero, Cadila Healthcare (Zydus Cadila), Mylan, and Cipla confirmed to Busin­ess Standard that they are working to raise production of this drug soon.
Pankaj Patel, chairman of Zydus Cadila, said they were planning to double their production of remdesivir from 30,000 vials daily. “In the next few weeks, we will double the current production. We are making 30,000 vials daily now. The demand for the drug is on the rise and we are doing our best to ensure there is no supply shortage,” Patel said. ....

Speaking on the occasion Shri DV Sadananda Gowda commended India’s capabilities as a global and reliable supplier of drugs and medical devices during the COVID-19 pandemic. Citing the recent UNCTAD report, he also pointed out India’s positive FDI growth even with a decline in FDI of 42% globally.  Shri Gowda said, “As the pandemic exposed the global vulnerabilities of the supply chains in the pharmaceuticals sector, the Department of Pharmaceuticals launched the Production Linked Incentive Scheme for bulk drugs, with a financial outlay of ₹6,940 crores across 53 APIs over 6 years. For Medical Devices, another PLI scheme was announced with an outlay of ₹3,420. Such interventions & incentives have played an instrumental role in realizing Prime Minister’s vision of ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’, or India for the world.” ....
