Plum rain front forecast to bring more heavy rains

A plum rain front is to linger over Taiwan proper through tomorrow, bringing highly unstable weather and chances of strong rainfall across the nation, the Central Weather Bureau (CWB) said yesterday.
In particular, residents of western and northeastern Taiwan as well as mountainous areas in southern Taiwan should take precautions, forecasters said.
Daniel Wu (吳德榮), a former CWB Weather Forecast Center director who is an adjunct associate professor of atmospheric sciences at National Central University, said that while the front might ease the nation’s prolonged water shortage, it might also cause flooding and mudslides.

TAIPEI (Taiwan News) Rainfall from a weather front has brought 13.18 million cubic meters of rainwater to Taiwan s reservoirs over the past few days.
On Thursday (April 29), Water Resources Agency (WRA) Deputy Director-General Wang Yi-feng (王藝峰). As of 6 a.m. that morning, it was estimated that the rains had brought 4.3 million cubic meters of water inflow to Shimen Reservoir and 1 million cubic meters to Baoshan Reservoir and Baoshan Second Reservoir in Hsinchu County.
WRA statistics show that from midnight on April 27 to 6 a.m. on April 29, the rains are expected to have added 13.18 million cubic meters to all reservoirs in Taiwan, reported CNA. This is equivalent to more than one day s worth of total water consumption in the country. ....

Taipei, April 26 (CNA) The rainy weather over the weekend helped some of Taiwan s farmers after a months-long drought, but the 1.2 million cubic meters it is expected to deliver to reservoirs will not do much to boost the overall water supply, officials said Monday.
Tsai Sheng-fu (蔡昇甫), chief of the Agency of Irrigation under the Council of Agriculture (COA), told CNA that the wet weather system brought rainfall to some drought-stricken agricultural hubs, especially in Kaohsiung and Pingtung, where mango and rice farmers have suffered major losses.

Agency, research body working on rainmaking flares

The Water Resources Agency is working with the Chungshan Institute of Science and Technology (國家中山科學研究院) to develop a new version of its ground-based rainmaking flares that can be fired higher into the air, but the device might not be ready in time to help with the current water shortage.
An initial test of the new device is expected to be carried out by the end of this year, agency Deputy Director-General Wang Yi-feng (王藝峰) said yesterday.
The flares would reach altitudes of 300m to 350m, well above the 200m attained by existing models, Wang said.

TAIPEI (Taiwan News) The government is planning to spend NT$160 billion (US$5.65 billion) to improve Taiwan s water infrastructure amid one of the worst droughts in recent memory.
Water Resources Agency (WRA) Deputy Director-General Wang Yi-feng (王藝峰) said during a radio interview on Tuesday (March 16) that improvements could increase the country s annual water collection and conservation capacity by 1 billion cubic meters by 2031, CNA reported. According to Wang, Taiwan gets on average around 2,500 millimeters or 80 to 90 billion cubic meters of rainfall a year, of which about 50 billion m³ flows directly into the ocean. ....
