It has to do mainly with the hot bearings, which is part of the reason we saw what happened in east palestine. there was a wheel bearing that had overheated. the crew was not alerted in time, so what has happened is norfolk southern has comes up with a six-point plan that includes updating the detector s ability to catch overheated bearings, to do that more effectively. another point is review the standards and practices for using hot bearing detectors. three, abby, they ll be adding 13 new acoustic detectors, which apparently are able to spot a problem that a visual inspection cannot. so some of the things that they are adding here to try to improve their system, but i have to tell you very quickly, one of the things the critics say, one simple thing you can do is add more crews to some of these ....

Said. reporter: in short, boris and amara, they say at this point in the investigation, they suspect it was a wheel bearing failure that led to the derailment on february 3rd. one out cars carrying plastic pellets was heated by a hot axle that sparked an initial fire. the testimony of the bearing got hotter, the train passed two wayside defect detectors that are basically devices supposed to detect axle problems on any trains that passen 0 the rails. that did not trigger an alarm because the heat threshold was not met at that point, however, it wasn t until the train passed a third detector down track that the temperatures were so hot, hot enough that that set off the alarm but by then, it was too late. so the devastating chain of events was set in motion. 38 cars derailed there near the pennsylvania state line and that included 11 tank cars carrying that were carrying hazardous materials that ignited ....

Spaced miles apart. had there been a detector earlier, that derailment may not have occurred. reporter: the ntsb says as the crew began breaking from 47 miles per hour, 38 cars derailed. on board 11 of the cars more than 115,000 gallons of hazardous vinyl chloride that fueled a fire that burned out of control. the new details come as transportation secretary pete buttigieg is making his first visit to the derailment site demanding that railroads enact new safety protocols on the length of trains and the strength of cars. i think we need to raise the bar on what s expected and on what s required, but i think the railroad industry should do more out of the gate. reporter: norfolk southern is cooperating with the investigation insisting safety is a top priority, but experts say the industry has resisted new regulations that could prevent a repeat. this was 100% preventable. we call things accidents. ....
