WEST HAVEN When Jared Mastej stands on the front porch of his Center Street house, where he’s lived since the 1980s, he notices things have changed on the First Avenue corridor that runs perpendicular to his home.
It’s impossible to miss the more than a dozen old homes lining the street with boarded-up windows kept behind a chain-link fence, and the roads leading to the water blocked off and closed to the public.

Demet Ozbay is bringing a European flair to the city with her new West Haven Pizza and Deli, and customers are eating it up.
Ozbay and her sister Fatma Ozbay opened the deli a little more than a week ago and were delightfully surprised by the reception from Westies who are pouring in for their New York-style bagels, specialty cream cheeses, cold cuts, gourmet pizzas, Italian specialties, quesadillas and popular steak and cheese sandwiches.
