× Health Officer Janet Castro (center) has been pivotal to the vaccine rollout in North Bergen. North Bergen has issued over 40,000 COVID-19 vaccines to residents, according to the township. The number includes vaccinations administered through the local site as well as other sites that the Health Department administers through a shared services agreement. Under the leadership of Health Officer Janet Castro, the township site opened in January along with partner sites in Union City, Secaucus, Weehawken and Harrison. Hackensack Meridian Health Palisades Medical Center in North Bergen was the first hospital in the county to receive the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine, administering it to frontline healthcare workers on Dec. 18. Jersey City Medical Center gave the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine to employees beginning on Dec. 21. CarePoint Health’s three hospitals, Bayonne Medical Center, Hoboken University Medical Center and Christ Hospital began administering the Moderna vaccine to employees on Dec. 21 and 22. Hudson Regional Hospital in Secaucus began distributing the Moderna vaccine to employees on Dec. 22. ....

As North Hudson is hit by a second surge of the COVID-19 pandemic, school instruction plans have been shifting. West New York West New York will continue its virtual instruction plan, Superintendent of Schools Clara Brito Herrera said in a letter to the community on Dec. 7. According to Herrera, the school district aimed to phase in to hybrid instruction at some point in the year. The district planned to reevaluate the learning plan at the end of the first marking period, but has now decided to remain virtual until the end of the second marking period in January of 2021.
