In his first comments since letting Doc Gamble go as head football coach, University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff athletic director Chris Robinson said the firing on Oct. 20 was not a decision made overnight.
The switch to Don Treadwell wasn’t a magic-wand act to suddenly change Golden Lion football fortunes. Although the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff fought Florida A&M University to a scoreless first quarter, the Rattlers rattled off 24 unanswered points on their way to a 27-6 win before a homecoming crowd Saturday in Tallahassee.
Don Treadwell has had more than a week to consider this moment in the history of University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff football. He’s taken over the Golden Lions for their last four games of the season, in hopes of reversing a five-game losing skid and avoiding a second straight losing record, almost two years after competing in the Southwestern Athletic Conference championship game.
Doc Gamble will be paid 50% of the remaining salary he would have earned had he remained head football coach at the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff through March 2023, according to his contract. A copy of Gamble's contract was released to The Commercial by request under the Arkansas Freedom of Information Act.
