Andardious search. i think they will have to get lucky. >> i remember the great explorer discovered the titanic and the enterprise, the aircraft carrier. he pointed out that you have to get maps to get close enough for the electronic stuff to wunchlth a mile away for the electronics to work for the pinging to be picked up? >> if they can narrow the search area a little bit that would be a great boost for this search. right now they have looked at the satellite data. really it is just this doppler shift in the frequency of the pings coming back from the plane. no one has found a plane or vessel...

Down to the sector in the area of perth, trying to do that. locate that haystack. and the progress that's been made, a lot of people slamming inmarsat or the malaysians for not getting it quicker. if they're going through this process of trying to work through the doppler shift and correlating mapping with other aircraft, if they're actually doing that, that's good news for us. we have to give them time. if you're the malaysian prime minister and want to say something decisive, it's going to take time. >> and andrea has a good question for jim. could there have been an amount of dangerous mate...

Head tell you is the most likely sequence of events here? >> well, we don't have a lot of facts number one, piers. that's one of the big problems in all of this. and frankly, the best primary factual information we have right now comes from this inmarsat data which we've been talking about. and the inmarsat data, the inmarsat satellite is not a satellite-tracking device. they have done a clever bit of work to try to make it do this job using the time it takes from the aim to tthe airplane and sa back and figure out timing as well as doppler shift to plot speed and direction. it's pretty clever...

You can contribute? >> sadly, this is the limit. there is no global decision to even after the air france of five years ago, no global decision to make direction and distance reporting come pull sorry on ships. they have to log in every six hours to say where they are. on aircraft, they need to log in at 500, 600 knots every 15 minutes. that could be done tomorrow with the existing technology we have. the mandate is not there globally. >> i want too bring in our chad meyers who also has some questions for you you. >> thank you for being with us on a very tough day. we heard something from keit...

Even know they could do it, but they figured out they could find out whether the plane was flying toward their satellite or away from the satellite by what is called doppler shift. so we talked to inmarsat and they said doppler shift is what we used. think of it on a giant flag pole in the middle of the indian ocean. it stays over the exact same spot all the time. 64.5 degrees east. so now let's look at what we think the pings probably looked like. they haven't released them, but we're pretty close here. we have where they thought the plane probably started and where it ended. i haven't drawn ...
