The South Shore Line's Double Track project received its final funding commitment Thursday when the Federal Transit Administration entered an agreement to provide $173 million of the project's $491 million cost. The federal New Starts grant will help fund a project that will add a second set of tracks along approximately 17 miles of single-track railroad between Gary and Michigan City, and include bridge replacements and station upgrades along the route.
