ISTANBUL: An Israeli emergency relief organization said Sunday it had suspended its earthquake rescue operation in Turkiye and returned home because of a “significant” security threat to its staff. The United Hatzalah group posted images on Twitter of its team assisting Turkish Red Crescent personnel rescue a person from the rubble near the quake’s epicenter in Kahramanmaras
The total number of dead was expected to rise much higher.
The most common injuries the United Hatzalah team is encountering are among locals desperately trying to dig people out of the rubble, says a spokesman for the organization.
Psychotrauma and crisis-response specialists from United Hatzalah flew to Florida in the wake of Hurricane Ian to give immediate trauma care.
Volunteers from all backgrounds of Israeli society including Muslim, Christian, and Jewish volunteers, both men and women, participated in the exercise.
