There are around 4,500 mutton stalls in the city and two slaughterhouses – at KR Market and at Tannery Road – where thousands of sheep and goats are slaughtered daily. On an average, 30,000 sheep and goats are killed per month at the Tannery Road slaughterhouse and 15,000 to 16,000 at the KR Market one.
According to the documents available with BM, the helpline (1962) received 212 distress calls in May 2023 -- it seems the helpline receives more than six distress calls per day. However, staff managing the helpline do nothing much, except advising the team to look into the complaint and do the needful.
