In presidential brief, a segment we bring you every sunday night featuring the most pressing natural security issues the president will wake up to tomorrow. with us is cnn national security analyst samantha winograd, who helped prepare the daily presidential briefing for president obama. all this comes days before the 18th anniversary before 9/11. what do you make of all this? unfortunately, ana, negotiating with the taliban is a necessary evil if we want stability in afghanistan. obama did it. but what obama didn t do was announce a drawdown decision before we had a deal, invite the taliban to camp david, or try to negotiate with the taliban by tweet. what all this means is that the national security team right now is trying to get negotiations back on track while concurrently trying to mitigate against the increased risk of violence by the taliban in light of our decision to cancel these talks. violence is the taliban s trump card, and it is likely they will try to retaliate agains ....

Told jake tapper trust, but verify. so there are still questions here. let s listen to how secretary pompeo described the decision to eventually call off the talks that were supposed to take place at camp david. we ve been working on those for a while and it was the case that when the taliban tried to gain negotiating advantage by conducting terror attacks inside of the country, president trump made the right decision to say that s not going to work, we re going to walk away from a deal if others try to use violence to achieve better ends in a negotiation. it s not right, it s not appropriate. it killed an american and it made no sense for the taliban to be rewarded for that kind of bad behavior. the taliban have been doing these kind of attacks and killing service members and civilians for a generation, as you note. so we know that one of the things that was part of these discussions was the potential drawdown of about 5,000 u.s. troops from afghanistan within ....

Normally stalwart allies of the president, like cheney and his own national security adviser, john bolton said to be frozen out of the talks because he opposed what the president was doing. there was going to be a partial drawdown leading to direct talks between the afghan president and the taliban. jo? what does this mean for our service members in afghanistan? they continue to lose their lives, sustain injuries on the job there. what does this mean for the u.s. mill tear i? the longest war in american history. american servicemen and women in danger are. as a matter of fact, as we just said, one killed last thursday. the taliban stepping up their attacks. there are 12,000 u.s. service people still in afghanistan and the taliban itself facing a threat from a rival terrorist group, isis, now getting a foothold within afghanistan and ....

Bring down a drawdown of our troops in the way of other country where s we don t have a robust presence? i think because the assessment has been that if we were to withdraw from afghan sta stan, i think we d be seeing the entire territory to the taliban and ultimately potentially to terrorist groups like isis, like al qaeda. and of course it was afghanistan that was the safe haven that allowed al qaeda to organize plan and train for the 9/11 attacks. we can t allow that to happen again. i believe in diplomacy. i think we should be bringing our troop levels down. we should be training the afghan forces. and over time we should have only a minimal presence in afghanistan. but i think the concerns are well founded that if we re only about, quote, bringing our troops home, then in fact we might actually be endangering u.s. interests more than helping it. all right. ....

Reality, brian. terrorism is an ambient threat. it s requesting to be with us. how do we organize with allies to suffocate it is the bottom line. you can declare a war over and want it over but the enemy gets a vote. so i m 100 percent aligned with how you just described it. brian: there was an announcement that ninth round of talks producing some type of drawdown with the taliban. dolls it concern you? well, i try not to talk having parting ways with the administration over matters of policy. we have secretary pompeo. secretary esper. the president who are trying to defend the country. i don t what i call the cheap seats. i don t want to talk from the cheap seattle now and make their job more difficult when we have a million troops out around the world trying to keep this big experiment we call america alive. steve: don t call him mad dog. that is not his call sign. it s chaos. commander chaos. anyway, check out his brand new book. it comes out today. it s calle call sign chaos. ....
