It was a smart watch instead of a Fitbit, but the well-intentioned gift was fraught with guilt. We knew we’d never match the writer David Sedaris, who claims to walk as many as 65,000 steps a day, but prompted by the “Great Enumerator” on one of our wrists, we usually managed 6,085 steps on our morning Charles River loop.
